Ameren Offers Energy-Saving Holiday Decorating Tips
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- With winter holidays fast approaching, Ameren Illinois is offering some energy-saving decorating tips.

The Peoria-based utility company recommends using Energy Star qualified decorative lighting. Such lights use 75 percent less electricity than conventional light strings, and they also last longer.

According to Ameren, if all holiday light strings sold nationwide this year were Energy Star qualified, electricity use could be cut by the amount of yearly electricity used by more than 70,000 single-family homes.

Ameren says solar-powered outdoor decorations are another "green" option but they need to be placed in sunny locations for their batteries to properly recharge.

And the company says remember safety when installing holiday lights. Never use more than three standard light sets per extension cord. And don't leave holiday lights on overnight or when away from home.
