Medicare Open Enrollment Runs Through Dec. 31
CHICAGO (AP) -- It's open enrollment period for Medicare beneficiaries, a time when people on Medicare can choose the best medical and prescription drug coverage to fit their needs.

Open enrollment started Monday and runs through Dec. 31.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is encouraging all Medicare beneficiaries to check to make sure they have the best coverage for them in 2011.

There are resources available to help at www.medicare.gov.

Beneficiaries also can get help around the clock by calling 1-800-MEDICARE.

Consumers advocates say people in private Medicare prescription drug plans should take a particularly close look at their benefits for next year. Many may face premium hikes unless they shop for a cheaper plan. Consumers also should make sure the drugs they need are covered by the plan's approved drug list.
