Report Lists Economic Impacts on Recycling
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity says the recycling industry in the state now directly employs some 40,000 people and contributes to the employment of many more.

A detailed economic study released by the department on Monday said an additional 34,000 jobs are indirectly tied to recycling and 37,500 more jobs are induced by the industry, for a total of 111,500 jobs.

The department defines indirect jobs are those created in companies that supply the recycling industry and induced jobs are those created when workers in the direct and indirect jobs spend money on goods and services.

In the report, the department said the three categories of jobs have a total payroll of $3.6 billion and the recycling industry in Illinois has gross receipts of $30.6 billion.
