Farmers Not Shying Away from Corn Next Year
Corn yields were not what was expected this fall, but soybeans were far better.

Despite the better than expected yields with soybeans, local agronomist Lance Tarchione tells WGIL producers are still leaning toward planting more corn next year.

"I really thought we'd see more soybeans next year, just because corn-on-corn was so bad for so many people. Soybeans were so good," Tarchione said. "You can't underestimate the Central Illinois corn grower's love for corn. We've had this beautiful open fall, and a lot of guys, as I talk to, aren't talking about more bean acres next year. If anything, I think I'm picking up a vibe that there could be more corn."

Tarchione says farmers didn't forget how to plant corn on corn this year; the weather just didn't cooperate over the summer months.

Tarchione adds, however, that seed corn might be in tight supply next year as producers didn't have much more luck with that than those who had commercial corn acres.
