Orpheum Successful in City Council Plea
The Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg is getting what it asked for.

Theatre president Kate Francis made a presentation before the Galesburg City Council during a special budget work session Monday night.

Francis asked that the council make good on their commitment of $100,000 toward replacement of the theatre's heating and cooling system.

Originally the money was contingent on whether the Orpheum received a federal grant, but the theatre had been twice denied.

Now Francis says they are looking to raise money all on their own and has already received a sizable amount for the project.

"All told, we have $259,459 pledged or paid," Francis told aldermen. "Our outstanding commitments continue to be $100,000 from the city in the TIF fund, $100,000 federal appropriation recommendation from Sen. [Dick] Durbin's office, $50,000 from Knox County, for an additional $250,000 pending."

The city council Monday night informally took a vote to keep the commitment, but a formal vote will have to come later.

The funds come from the tax increment financing district.

The council also showed support in allowing the Orpheum to receive a full two percent of the hotel-motel tax proceeds, instead of replacing it with a $100,000 cap.

Francis estimates the heating -cooling system will cost more than $825,000.
