Ready for Winter
(IRN)-IDOT is declaring itself ready for snow.

IDOT has 1,810 trucks and 2,838 workers ready to clear snow and ice from 43,424 lane-miles of state highways. Salt is in good supply.

Last winter, IDOT went through 536,617 tons of salt and 811,000 hours of labor. Total cost of snow removal on state routes last winter: $79.5 million.

In terms of safety, state police remind drivers that intersections, bridges and off-ramps are dangerous even if the main road has been cleared of snow and ice, so drivers should be careful about speed and allow longer stopping distance than they would on pavement that's known to be dry.

Snow plow drivers advise others using the road not to try to pass a snow plow on the right, since that's typically where they're pushing the snow.
