Burris Calls for More Diversity in Farewell Speech
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senator Roland Burris says his time in the U.S. Senate has been a "towering testament" to the American Dream.

Burris gave his farewell speech on Thursday. The Democrat is leaving the seat he was appointed to by former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to make way for Republican Congressman Mark Kirk.

Kirk who won an election to fill the remainder of Burris' term and a full six-year term on Election Day. Kirk will be sworn in after Thanksgiving.

Burris has been viewed as something of an outcast in Washington, but he says he is proud of his accomplishments.

He says America must do more to improve the diversity of the Senate. Burris says it is painful to him that when he leaves, there will be no more African American senators.
