Warren County Board Passes Sales Tax Increase
It took plenty of discussion, but the Warren County Board has backed what a majority of voters said they wanted: a sales tax increase to benefit their schools.

The Warren County Board Wednesday morning voted 11 to 1 to implement a one percent increase in the County wide sales tax for school construction related projects.

The board had to ratify the increase before it could take effect.

But members had their concerns, like District four member Karen Starbuck, who wondered if the county would actually see the money.

"Sales tax overall, has the state been funding the county with their sales tax readily, or is this going to be another pot of money that's going to sit down there?"

Finance Committee Chairman Mike Pearson, the only county board member to vote against the sales tax increase, says the state is okay with that money.

"It appears that the sales tax is one of the few things that the state has not slowed down."

The proceeds are expected to help the United School District build a new fieldhouse, while the Monmouth-Roseville School District will use some for budget relief, and will save the rest for future construction projects.

The Warren County Board also approved a budget and property tax levy for the current fiscal year, and okayed contracts with the public defender, assistant public defender, zoning administrator, and the county animal control warden.
