Casino's Owners Looking for Smoking Ban Exemption
(IRN)-Smoking ban fans say it's working beautifully. Casino owners say it's not. The Smoke Free Illinois Act is being blamed for the drop in gambling revenue, so casinos want an exemption.

But The American Cancer Society's Illinois Division is adamantly opposed. Division director of public policy and government relations Thom Mannard says the first concern is the casino workers, who should not have to breathe second hand smoke. He says many workers are thrilled that they now have clean air, and wouldn't be able to find other jobs in this economy if they're forced out because of the allowance of smoking.

The House Executive Committee approved the change this week, and the measure now awaits full House action. The Smoke Free Illinois Act was passed in 2007, taking effect Jan. 1, 2008.
