Fire Experts Warn About Dangers of Turkey Fryers
CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois fire prevention experts are warning residents of the dangers of turkey fryers as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal says there are about three times more fires than average on Thanksgiving. The fire marshal's office says tests show deep fryers have a risk of tipping over, overheating or spilling hot oil -- all things that can lead to fires and burns. When bubbling hot oil spills over the pot's rim it could cause an explosion.

Experts advise cooks check food regularly and keep anything flammable away from the stovetop. Officials say you can put out grease fires with a non-glass lid. They say not to put water on a grease fire because that causes burning oil to splash and spread the grease.
