Former Police Officer Riley Pleads Guilty; Probation Possible
POSTED 4:20pm 11/22/10 A now-former Galesburg police officer accused of stealing money from the department has pleaded guilty to one of the charges against him.

Warren Anthony "Tony" Riley was in Knox County Circuit Court Monday for what was supposed to be a re-arraignment hearing, but he instead pleaded guilty to a single Class-3 Felony Charge of Theft.

It was an open plea; but in exchange, court records indicate three charges of Official Misconduct will not be prosecuted.

Riley was arrested in early March of this year, after he allegedly entered a police investigator's desk drawer, and stole money that was earmarked for controlled drug buys on multiple occasions between March of 2007 and this past February.

Further details of the case have never been released, because Freedom of Information Act requests filed by WGIL and other media outlets have been denied. One WGIL filed is still under review in the Illinois Attorney General's Office.

Special Prosecutor Chuck Zalar said in court when Riley is sentenced February first, he'll likely ask for probation and community service, but likely no imprisonment.

Riley quit his job with the Galesburg Police Department a day before being arrested.
