State Education Superintendent Gets National Nod
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois' education superintendent, Christopher Koch, is the new president of the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The council consists of public K-to-12 education officials nationwide. It works on national education policies with federal and state agencies and Congress.

Koch was elected last week in Kentucky during the council's annual fall meeting.

Illinois Board of Education Chairman Jesse Ruiz says it's important for the state to have a seat at the table during a crucial time of reviewing education policies nationwide.

Koch is a former special education teacher and has been the state superintendent since 2006.

He says he's honored to be picked to lead during a challenging time in education, facing unprecedented reform and tight fiscal times.
