Small Business Shopping Encouraged on Saturday
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois officials are encouraging shoppers to patronize the state's small businesses on Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Economic development officials say "Small Business Saturday" is sandwiched nicely between "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" -- traditionally two of the year's busiest shopping days.

There are more than 500,000 small businesses, retailers and merchants in Illinois.

The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is teaming with American Express on the promotion.

The federal government says the nation's 28 million small businesses created 65 percent of new jobs.

DCEO Director Warren Ribley says if every small business in the state could add one job the unemployment rate would drop five points.

Illinois has a $2,500 tax credit for each job created at businesses with 50 or fewer employers before June 30.
