Unemployment Increases Locally, Decreases Statewide
Unemployment is once again down in the state of Illinois -- just not here.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the statewide unemployment rate of 9.2% in October and released Wednesday marks a rate that they say has gone down consistently every month since January.

But that's where the consistency ends. Most unemployment rates in this area actually increased after months of declines.

The Galesburg, Knox County, and Warren County jobless averages all increased last month. Galesburg is at 9.6%. All of Knox County is at 9.1%, and Warren County is at 7.7% percent -- all of which are up two-or-three-tenths of a percent.

Fulton County's jobless rate actually held steady at 10.3% percent, while Henderson and Mercer Counties saw unemployment rates continue to decrease. Otherwise, most local counties increased.

The state says in the year-to-year period, there was a loss of 475 non-farm payroll jobs. Leisure-Hospitality and Professional-Business Services saw the steepest declines, while the Education-Health Services fields added 325 jobs during that time.
