Schakowsky: Emanuel is Eligible to Run for Mayor
CHICAGO (AP) -- Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky says Chicago mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel shouldn't be punished for ``responding to the call'' of the president.

Schakowsky told reporters on a conference call Friday that Emanuel is a lifelong Chicago resident and always intended to return home after serving as President Barack Obama's chief of staff in Washington.

She says serving the president doesn't make Emanuel ineligible to run for mayor.

Five Chicagoans filed petitions Wednesday that seek to push Emanuel off the February ballot by challenging his status as a city resident.

Chicago election attorney Burt Odelson says he also filed a challenge Friday.

Emanuel still owns a home in Chicago, but rented it out when he moved to Washington two years ago. He's currently renting a place on Chicago's North Side.
