Illinois Man Believed to Be Brain Dead Wakes Up
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) -- An Illinois man who was believed brain dead after suffering an aortic aneurism has awakened and begun talking to his family.

The Hawk Eye in Burlington says that 84-year-old Gene Stotts of Oquawka, Ill., suffered the aneurism on Nov. 15 and remained sedated after surgery. Tests later showed the only part of his brain that was functioning was the part that controlled his breathing.

His daughters, Peggy Link and Shirley Martinez, say the decision was made Tuesday to remove him from life support. They say they left the room but a nurse came to get them because their father had awakened.

Link calls her father's recovery a miracle. Stott's family says he went back into surgery Wednesday for follow-up care from the initial surgery but is doing fine.
