Moffitt: Lame Ducks Could Help Decide Important Issues
On January 12th, newly elected members of the Illinois General Assembly will be sworn in.

But big issues like civil unions, medical marijuana, and maybe most importantly, an income tax increase could be voted on during the veto session.

74th District State Representative Don Moffitt, however, doesn't believe those votes should take place, but there's a good chance they will because almost a full week of session was schedule recently, just before January 12th.

"All of those [session days] are still a part of the veto session. All of those are in 'lame duck' session," Moffitt said. "All of those people that will be voting; there will be 18 members of the House that will still be voting. That's what I'm concerned about. The people expressed their opinion on November second. The big issues, I think, should wait until those [newly-elected] people are in."

Moffitt feels the newly elected officials should have the chance to vote on those issues, because that is the will of people considering they won their respective elections.

Moffitt spoke last week at the Galesburg Noon Lion's Club meeting.
