Holiday Cards to Troops
(IRN)-Governor Pat Quinn wants Illinois school children to make holiday cards for wounded troops overseas.

Quinn says he plans to personally deliver the cards before Christmas to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

Quinn told school children about the annual holiday card drive during a ceremony Monday to light the Christmas tree at the Thompson Center in Chicago .

The cards, he said, are special to the wounded troops who are hospitalized and away from their homes and families during the holidays.

Teachers who want their students to send holiday cards to the troops should mail them to the governor's office.

During the tree lighting ceremony, Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Dan Grant also highlighted the needs of homeless veterans. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that approximately one-third of the nation's adult homeless population is made up of veterans. In Illinois nearly 10 percent of the homeless population is made up of veterans.
