NIU Program to Encourage Women to Choose Politics
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) -- Northern Illinois University has been picked to encourage and train young women to run for elected office.

The school in DeKalb is among 11 colleges selected by the American Association of University Women and Running Start.

The programs called Elect Her, Campus Women win in 2011, start next year. They aim to get women students more involved in politics on campus and as careers.

Women hold just 17 percent of the seats in Congress and 24 percent of the seats in state legislatures.

Jill Dunlap of NIU's Women's Resource Center says the campus has had only two women student association presidents ever. She hopes the program will improve that.

Nine colleges ran similar programs last year that succeeded in getting more women interested in a political career.
