A Nail-Biter for a Sales Tax Increase in Warren County
As the saying goes, don't count your chickens before they're hatched. At least, for Monmouth-Roseville School District Superintendent Paul Woehlke, he's not.

"I'm not sure if it's time to celebrate yet. I understood there are 50 absentee ballots left to be counted," Woehlke said.

Woehlke is worried because without those absentee ballots, a measure to increase the sales tax one-percent in Warren County for the benefit of the Monmouth-Roseville and United School Districts passed by only 26 votes.

Woehlke tells WGIL if those vote totals hold out, his district can really use the money.

"A little less than half of the money would go toward covering annual operating costs that we can cover with the funds," Woehlke said. "That would really be a relief to our annual budget situation. And the rest of the funds would be preserved for future projects in our facilities."

Seeking a sales tax increase was a part of a budget deficit reduction plan submitted to the state last year, that also resulted in two of District-238's schools closing, along with a number of layoffs.

The United School District wanted to use its share possibly for a new fieldhouse, but officials there say nothing has been decided.
