Kirk, Giannoulias Meet Over Beer
CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Republican Mark Kirk says he hopes he's created a post-election tradition by sharing a beer with former Democratic opponent Alexi Giannoulias.

The two men who ran for U.S. Senate met Wednesday at a downtown Chicago bar and spoke privately for about 20 minutes.

Both politicians said the time for partisanship was over now that a campaign that was described as one Illinois' most combative has ended. The campaign for President Barack Obama's old Senate seat was packed with bickering, ugly ads and name-calling.

Kirk first proposed the meeting at Billy Goat Tavern during his victory speech late Tuesday.

Billy Goat manager Bill Sianis says the bar's downtown location has long been a hangout for reporters, politicians and "everyday Chicago people."

Sianis' great-uncle William Sianis founded the bar in 1934.
