District 205 Property Tax Bills Could Go Down
While the city of Galesburg has toyed with the idea of raising the property tax levy for city services, the Galesburg School District likely won't be doing the same thing.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, Guy Cahill, says when the Galesburg School Board meets Monday night, they'll ask for a tax levy next year that's exactly the same as this year, at around $16.3 million.

Cahill tells WGIL that'll be good news for property owners when they get their property tax bills next year.

"We're proposing that there be no increase -- in fact, a modest decrease," Cahill said. "So, the $100,000 home owner...no change in value. And, property values in Galesburg township actually went down -- we're learning 1.5%"

Cahill says even before that, the district was looking at cutting the tax bill roughly $5 per homeowner. But he says that likely will be even more. He says there is some increase in property values in the Warren County portion of the district.

Cahill says even without Tuesday's passage of the one-percent sales tax increase and the expenditures planned as part of a Master Facilities Plan, the district has done its best to keep its finances in good shape, as an audit reviewed at Tuesday's school board budget committee meeting indicated.
