Quinn Ready for Tax Increase
(IRN)-Governor Pat Quinn says his victory in Tuesday's election means he and lawmakers have public support for an income tax increase.

Quinn has proposed an increase of 1 percentage point to bail out the state, which is facing obligations of $13 billion for which it hasn't the money. He says he will try to get lawmakers to approve this idea, either in the Veto Session this month, or in the regular session that starts in January.

"I've said all along from pretty much when I got sworn in we need revenue for education in particular in Illinois, and I think by winning the election, I think that is support for us to do exactly that," Quinn said.

Quinn said he will not go back on this "challenging but very important thing."

In the past, lawmakers have not approved Quinn's various requests for income tax increases, and there will be fewer Democrats in both the House and Senate come January.
