LIHEAP Waiting for Appropriations
(IRN)-Congress has failed to agree on a federal budget, and that will have a negative impact on an important winter program.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program had hoped to get a little over $5 billion this winter heating season in order to help the elderly and low income residents with their heating bills across the nation. But according to Adrienne Jones, community relations director with Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, it looks like Illinois and other states could get far less assistance.

Jones says because of the lack of a budget, the current funds amount to only $3.3 billion. She hopes that when Congress reconvenes November 15, members will vote on the appropriations bill and allocate $5.1 billion to the program.

Jones says that given the current economic situation, more people are relying on LIHEAP assistance.
