Galesburg Rejects Contract for Bunker Links Golf Pro
The city of Galesburg is already struggling to put a balanced budget together next year, and some council members say action taken Monday night will only make things worse.

In a five to three vote, city council members voted not accept a contract with Greg Merrill, Golf Pro at Bunker Links Golf Course.

Merrill not only owns the golf carts at the course, but also runs the pro shop.

Alderman Wayne Dennis voted to accept the contract and says the city can't afford not to.

"Right now the golf carts belong to Mr. Merrill, am I right? Those are his golf carts, so if all the sudden we don't renew his contract, he could pull a semi in there, take his 44 golf carts and be gone. The city is going to have to buy golf carts and that's another expenditure which we don't have, so I know what we are arguing about. There's no way we can do this."

Members in opposition to the contract feel the city should be getting some revenue from the golf carts among other things.

At this week's city council meeting, members also voted against a measure that would have disallowed private golf carts at the course.
