Ameren Rates Increase Less than Expected
(IRN)-If your natural gas, electricity or both come from Ameren Illinois, you will see a rate increase. But it's a smaller one than the Downstate utility giant had asked for.

The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved $43.7 million in new revenue for Ameren, about one third of the company's final request of $130 million. The original ruling was much smaller for Ameren, which appealed.

The ICC says customers should see an increase of about 1 percent on the natural gas bill, and 1 percent or less on the electricity bill.

Ameren Illinois spokesman Leigh Morris says customers can still count on the lights coming on when they flip the switch, but: "We've halted construction projects. We're not buying new vehicles. Those two things alone have an impact on the economy in Illinois."

Morris says people interested in saving energy can go to Ameren's web site, www.actonenergy.com, and consider such practices as using compact florescent light bulbs.
