Galesburg Group Planning Free Meals for School Kids During Break
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and Christmas is not far off. While many might be thinking about all the holiday food and festivities, one Galesburg group is considering those who will be going without.

The Hunger Action Group was newly formed last year, and members are concerned about children who will be out school for an extended period over the holidays.

Member Peter Schaurtzman attend the Galesburg city council meeting Monday to solicit help.

"As I found out on the phone last week, about 57 to 58 percent of the children in out public school system are receiving free or reduced lunch as well as breakfast or have the potential to and we are concerned that up to have of our children may go unfed."

The Galesburg school system will be closed an extra two weeks in January in order to save energy costs.

The Hunger Action group is hoping to provide meals for kids during those two weeks to prevent them from suffering while schools is closed and those free and reduced lunches are not available.

Anyone wishing to help or with ideas is encouraged to contact the group at thepeopleofgalesburg@gmail.com
