Political Science Professor Says Quinn's Win Astonishing
(IRN)- The fact that Governor Pat Quinn won election to a full term is "astonishing," an observer says.

It was a difficult environment for Quinn, exacerbating a high unfavorability score for the candidate himself, says Matt Streb, political science professor at Northern Illinois University.

"When you look at the shape of the economy and the budget situation and things like that, it's not a good time for an incumbent to be running," said Streb, who was interviewed for this week's Eye on Illinois program. "Quinn's campaign was stumbling, they really were failing to gain much traction, they went through a different pollster, different media people, and so the fact that he is gonna pull this out I think is surprising."

Quinn won by about 19,400 votes, a difference of about ½ of 1 percent over State Senator Bill Brady, the second place finisher.

Streb says Quinn gained some ground by painting Brady as an extreme social conservative, and geographically, Quinn lost Downstate by less than the pre-election public opinion polls projected he would, and Quinn benefited from strong turnout in his geographical base of Chicago and suburban Cook County.
