CSC Program Tutoring Life's Basics
A Carl Sandburg College program aimed at improving reading and math skills in adults has picked up steam over the last five years.

C-S-C's Literacy Coalition has served already 136 adults since July 1st of this year, after a total of 163 were tutored last year. In 2007, 85 adults sought help.

Literacy Coordinator Karen Avalos tells WGIL the reason for such an increase can be be attributed to the rise in foreign, less educated people looking for work in the C-S-C district.

"We've seen an increase in the number of people coming to work at Farmland," she said. "There's a big pocket of people coming from Africa, Central Africa, and West/ Central Africa. And in Janurary or February there were 45 people that came into the area from Burma too. They were working at Farmland, but they needed to learn English."

Avalos says the adult learning centers in Galesburg, Carthage, and Bushnell address the culture shock of new people coming into the country.

She says centers also address laws in the states and voting requirements or procedures.
