FIRST ON WGIL: Big Bill for Representation in Sheley Case
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 11/15/11 Knox County's General Fund is going to take quite a hit after the County Board's Finance Committee learned of a hefty bill that's been received.

The committee Tuesday night learned that attorney Jeremy Karlin has submitted a bill to the County for $45,000 for his services representing accused spree killer Nicholas Sheley up until the conclusion of the trial in September, where he was convicted of the 2008 death of 65-year old Ronald Randall.

State's Attorney John Pepmeyer says he has no reason to question Karlin's bill.

"I don't know what he's going to actually claim," Pepmeyer said. "Myself and the guys from the [Illinois Attorney General's] Office basically monitored his bill, and we know what time he put in. And, it's pretty square."

Pepmeyer says he thinks another bill will come in from Karlin after sentencing which is this coming Friday, that could total as much as another $15,000.

So far, County officials say, it's cost the County as much as $70,000 for various services performed during the case.

Some thought it would be closer to $500,000 at one point, though, but that was lessened when the state's death penalty law was repealed.

The full Knox County Board will vote on that and other bills at their November 29th meeting.
