Knox County Employers Share Their Criteria For Hiring
The Galesburg Public Library Tuesday hosted a panel discussion for residents and Department of Rehabilitation Services customers on tips for finding employment.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security co-hosted the event with D-R-S. Representatives from various businesses in Knox County shared what they look for in job applicants.

One of those was HR-Director at Lowes Home Improvement in Galesburg-- Dan A'Hearn. He says the job interview is no place for sharing credit.

"When you're in the interview process, that is your time to shine," he said. "That's when we ask those specific questions, tell me about a time that you did this or that. You don't want to say, 'Well I helped...'"

"No, no, no. You want to concentrate on you-- 'I did this, this was my plan and my idea, and I completed it.'"

A'Hearn says job seekers should be prepared for a situational-based interview process, with each additional interview more specific to the particular department of hire.

He says in filling out applications, applicants must be as specific as possible with their past job experience.

Many companies promote from within, according to A'Hearn. For that, he says the sky is the limit for even new part-time hires.
