New Technology To Test County Highways
Trucks in Illinois are now legally allowed to haul up to 80,000 pounds-- warranting a study to be conducted on the county's highways.

Doug Steele of Champaign-based Applied Research Associates says this makes testing the structural capacity of Knox County Roadways all the more necessary.

"Now with all the heavier traffic, and the higher load on all these highways, it's a good time to do that," he said. "Those roads have never been intended to carry the heavier truck traffic. They are all of a sudden seeing them, and it has consequences for the long run."

Steele's company will test the structural capacity of the county's roadways by a new reflective-based technology. He says the stronger the reflection, the weaker a road is.

He and the county engineer say the results will determine which highways are in the most need of resurfacing.

The testing is expected to conclude by Thanksgiving. It will include all county roads except for those in Altona because they are already scheduled for resurfacing.

Payment for the evaluation of the pavement will come from the federal aid matching fund.
