New Help for Annual Fireworks Show
A local organization that helped put on Galesburg's annual fireworks show has disbanded, so a new one will be replacing it.

The Galesburg City Council learned recently that the Knox County United Way will be replacing the Galesburg Jaycees as the official agency benefitting from the annual Big Bang Boom fireworks show WGIL co-produces every year.

United Way Executive Director Ann Tucker says the fireworks are perfect for her agency.

"We appreciate the opportunity, and feel that it will be great exposure for our agencies," Tucker said. "We're treading very lightly this year, just to see what the possibilities are. But we feel there are some great possibilities in educational and informing our community, and making it an even better event than in the past."

The United Way, which will help with logistics for the fireworks show, asked for $8,000 from the city to help pay for the fireworks, which the council tentatively agreed to.

That amount had been requested in the past few years but not granted, because the Galesburg Jaycees didn't show up for the council meeting dealing with agency funding.
