Aldermen Amend Property Tax Levy Request
The Galesburg City Council is now poised to vote on a property tax levy request that is nearly five-percent higher than the request made last year.

Aldermen voted five-to-three Monday night to amend the property tax levy request, so that it goes up nearly five-percent to just over eight-million dollars, versus the seven-point-eight million the city based the budget on.

Seventh Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin says the money is needed to keep city services simply going as is.

"What this motion does, is simply keeps the general fund levy the exact same as it was last year, it's not asking for additional dollars," Karlin said. "And all that we're doing with this proposal is mending the levies for the pension funds."

That's because City Treasurer Marv Dahlberg told aldermen the pension funds weren't being fulfilled at the level they should be at according to the state.

Three aldermen voted against the levy increase, and none of them stated why: Ken Goad, Russell Fleming, and Wayne Allen, though they've stated in the past concern about placing undue burden on taxpayers despite tough budget times. A final vote on the levy request comes next month.
