State Police Patrolling Over The Holidays
The Illinois State Police says this is a deadly time of year, and they don't want you to be a part of it.

With the Illinois Department of Transportation, the State Police say it will have over 17-hundred areas statewide where they'll be looking to see if drivers are wearing their seat belts, and at least 40 other roadside safety checks.

Trooper Jason Wilson is the Safety Education Officer with District-7 of the Illinois State Police, and tells WGIL the special enforcement periods work.

"We've actual seen a drastic decrease in fatalities over the past several years," Wilson said. "One of the biggest contributors seems to be people are buckling up more. As the rate of seat belt use goes up in the state of Illinois, we have seen a drastic decrease in fatalities."

"So much so, we are continuing to see the downward spiral of fatality numbers."

Wilson says officers will also put a special emphasis on things like drunk and distracted driving.

He says the number of motorists caught texting while driving, for instance, continues to rise.

The special enforcement details continue through Sunday night.
