Healthy Holiday Feasts Begin With Clean Hands
The Knox County Health Department is warning against the greater risks of food-borne illnesses affecting people for the holidays.

Sarah WIllett is a licensed Environmental Health Practitioner with the health department. She says the holidays are a time to share meals together, but there needs to be caution for spreading germs.

Willett tells WGIL the biggest tip in healthier food handling is make sure your hands are clean.

"Wash your hands frequently, using warm water and soap," Willett said. "Scrub for at least 20 seconds. The good rule of thumb there is, maybe, in your head, since the "ABC" song, or sing "Happy Birthday" to yourself twice. Making sure you're scrubbing underneath your fingernails and in the creases in your hand."

Willett says to use a fresh paper towel each time to dry your hands, because wiping on an apron or kitchen towel can re-contaminate them.

She says the last thing families want to deal with on Thanksgiving is someone sick either from food not being prepared correctly or sitting out too long.
