Unemployment Mostly Up in Area
Local unemployment figures are moving up again after a brief movement downward.

Figures provided by the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicate the Knox County unemployment average for October preliminarily stands at 8.6%, up three-tenths from September's revised figure.

In the City of Galesburg proper, the unemployment figure is now at 9.3%, up also three-tenths.

Over 2,200 Knox County residents are listed as unemployed, up about 80 from the previous month. 1,400 people in that figure are listed as unemployed in Galesburg alone, up about 50.

Warren County's unemployment is at 7.4% percent, up one-tenth from September.

The state combines the Knox and Warren County numbers to get the Galesburg-Area Unemployment average. That number is at 8.3% percent, up two-tenths.

Statewide, the jobless average is at 9.5% percent, a full percent higher than the national average. Officials say unemployment is down in five metropolitan areas, up in four, and unchanged in three.
