Library Board Thankful For Property Tax Levy Increase
The Galesburg Public Library Board of Trustees likes any scenario it has seen from the city of Galesburg in terms of the 2012 Fiscal Year Budget.

City Council critic and library board treasurer Mike Kroll says the council, and specifically Mayor Sal Garza and City Manager Todd Thompson need to be thanked for the 34-thousand dollar levy increase request included in any of several budget scenarios presented to aldermen last week.

Kroll says, though, that the request is essentially the same amount of money requested before health insurance cost increases were figured in, though, which means some cuts still have to be made.

"We believe that by not filling one of our unfilled positions next year, and by making a few judicious changes in the hours for part timers," Kroll said. "We will actually be reducing our total normal personnel budget from what it was this year, without inhibiting our services or forcing us to close another day."

Kroll says some other cuts such as looking at magazine subscriptions and other things will mean the library should be able to stay within budget for the most part.

However, Kroll suggests aldermanic support may not be there. He says while some seem to support the library's request, there are definitely others who don't.
