Town Clock Approved for Knoxville's Downtown
The proposition of a town clock for the city of Knoxville faced the city council for a third time this past week, and alderman narrowly voted in it's favor.

Cuncil members approved to put $4,700 towards the clock by a five to two vote. Alderman Jim McGovern was against it, saying the city council should wait on reports from the University of Illinois Extension Office regarding possible economic development and revitalization of the city's downtown.

But Alderman Kirk Heller says developing downtown Main Street doesn't happen overnight.

"Unless we have a genie up here, that downtown thing is a long-term goal," Heller said. "That's not going to happen...overnight. I think the clock looks fine."

"The only other thing I have an issue with, is the $4,700," Alderman Tom Worden said.

Worden, who voted against the town clock, says the $4,700 dollars being asked of from the city is a bit much. He cites a $6,000 return the council has yet to receive from contributions to the historical sites earlier in the year.

Although others showed their concern of the high asking price, the majority agreed a town clock would be a starting point in beautifying the downtown area.
