Subcommittee Converges On Zephyr Dome's Future
A subcommittee of the master facilities plan in the works by the Galesburg School District is tending to the re-evaluation requests of those loyal to the "Zephyr Dome."

One of those members is Bob Fulton, who said Thursday he doesn't understand why money should be spent on a structure also known as the old Lombard College Gym already deemed condemned.

"I have a big problem asking the taxpayers to have school funds spent on this building," Fulton said. "I think the board did their dilligence when they previously asked for this to be condemned. And I guess in the back of my mind, I don't know why we should be revisiting this again."

Fulton says he doesn't believe it should be the primary responsibility of the school system to preserve the old Lombard gym. He says funds should be used on the buildings already in use.

A 2008 estimate priced the renovation of the Zephyr Dome at almost one-point-six million dollars. The price for its demolition was estimated to just under 100-thousand dollars this past August.

The subcommittee with reconvene in December to way other option, including historical preservation and an auction.
