Largest Burden Of Higher Education Sits On Community Colleges
One Macomb Republican feels community colleges are too valuable to fall victim to the state's deficit reduction plan.

Norine Hammond of the 94th District sits on the committee of Appropriations and Higher Education.

She says although schools like Carl Sandburg College didn't receive similar items from past years like furniture, the community colleges' budget remained flat.

"It was pretty much from the ghetco it was determined that we were going to minimize any cuts to community colleges if there had to be any," Hammond said. "Because we realized you carrying the highest burden for higher education at this point in time."

Hammond says more students are taking the community college route because of the affordability. She was one of many local state representatives inside C-S-C for a luncheon Friday.

A representative from 18th District Congressman Aaron Schock's office echoed Hammond's thoughts on affordability-- saying they also encourage availability, flexibility, and creativity.
