Property Tax Levy Before City Council Tonight
The City of Galesburg is asking aldermen Monday night to consider a property tax levy request that gives the Galesburg Public Library what it wants, while keeping the property tax levy flat, and helps pay some pension costs.

Aldermen Monday will consider an eight-point-one million dollar property tax request -- about four-percent higher than last year, but lower than the amount needed that would have required the city to hold a truth in taxation hearing.

It's the alternative presented at a recent city council budget work session, and will put the city closer to adopting a budget for the 2012 fiscal year that starts in January.

In the levy amount, the amount needed for police pensions decreases, but fire pensions increase. The library property tax levy rate would increase 34-thousand dollars over the 2010 levy.

Aldermen Monday night will also consider a new anti-graffiti ordinance, and re-zones a portion of property along Carl Sandburg Drive so that IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union near the Galesburg Lowe's store.

Aldermen meet at 6:30pm Monday inside council chambers at Galesburg City Hall.
