FIRST ON WGIL: GEA And District 205 Officials Reach Tentative Deal
FIRST REPORTED 5:59pm 11/7/11, UPDATED 5am 11/8/11 On the final day of scheduled negotiations with a federal mediator an accord was reached between the teacher's union and district officials in Galesburg.

Galesburg Education Association President Russ Ullrich says the GEA is thrilled to have struck a tentative deal with the District 205 board of education.

He tells WGIL the entire negotiation process was troublesome because the teachers aren't professionals at negotiating, they're only teachers.

"Not only do we have to do our normal day job of teaching the students, but we have to work in this massively, heavy, stressful negotiation," Ullrich said. "There's absolutely no doubt our team is mentally exhausted but excited that we have almost reached the finish line. There's a sense of relief coming, but we haven't gone there yet."

Wednesday night at 5pm the GEA will gather at Galesburg High School for a membership meeting to discuss the contract's details.

Ullrich says the contract it will be up for a ratification vote. If ratified, the board must then approve the deal.

District-205 Superintendent Gene Denisar declined to be interviewed.
