Orpheum Changes Course On Theatre Upgrades
Heating and air conditioning system upgrades at Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre won't be done until likely the summer, but some work will be done in the coming months, after a firm that was going to do the work was axed.

The Knox County Civic Center Authority Board voted Monday to terminate its agreement with Johnson Controls after the company decided it couldn't do the proposed upgrades by March of next year, when a grant that will help pay for the work expires.

The firm decided to work with Quad Cities-based KJWW to upgrade the theatre's lights now, something board member David Guenther says he likes compared to another firm that submitted a proposal.

"We've got one, given the information of success in more than one place, success has been proven," he said. "We are under time contraints, we are fairly certain that the budget constraints that are there we can beat. In my opinion, it says let's do it and get moving."

The work is expected not to exceed $125,000, $100,000 of which is coming from a federal grant administered through the Western Illinois Regional Council.

Heating and air conditioning upgrades, theatre president Kate Francis says, will be done in August or September when not as many events are scheduled at the theatre.
