City Council Divided On Tax Levy Issue
A few Galesburg city aldermen wonder why the city doesn't always have to have a public hearing every time they adopt a tax levy. Others don't mind that they don't.

The Galesburg City Council voted five-to-three Monday to approve a resolution expressing an intent not to exceed 105 percent of the 2010 property tax levy extension when making the 2011 request.

105 percent or over requires a Truth in Taxation Hearing to be held.

But Seventh Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin says the hearing should be held anyway.

"I don't see the problem in having a truth in taxation hearing, let's have it," Karlin said. "Let's have a conversation of why to add the appropriate amount of taxes and that should be raised to fund the appropriate level of services in the community."

"I think we haven't had that conversation enough, I'm up for having it more."

Gaslesburg Mayor Sal Garza says the discussions about the city budget have been open, and the city has not been dishonest at any time about its intent.

The City is proposing a eight-point-one million dollar property tax levy request as part of its budget -- a little more than four percent more money than last year, with a levy rate that's virtually flat due to declining property values.
