District 205 Moves Forward With Big Internet Plans
The Galesburg School District wants to upgrade its computer and internet network as part of the 110-million dollar Master Facilities Plan. But those upgrades could benefit the City of Galesburg as a whole.

It's been a part of the plan all along, but District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill talked more about a proposed Municipal-Area Internet Network. Cahill says by upgrading fiber-optic lines, the district's facilities can be better connected.

But if done right, Cahill says the upgrades could benefit the city, Knox College, and Carl Sandburg College as well.

"The key is to create this public safety network as the added advantage of each of the partners, the community colleges, Knox College, ourselves, the city," he said. "To aggregete our despaired bandwiths through the internet into one larger pipe."

Cahill says he's been meeting with city and officials from both college about the possibilities of using the network for public safety, education, and other purposes including a city-wide wi-fi internet network -- something first discussed a year ago when Galesburg tried to be the city Google chose to build a similar network -- an award that later went to Kansas City.

All the proposed upgrades would cost around a million dollars, with at least half being paid by the school district.
