Local Employer Laying Off A Dozen
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 11/10/11 A Galesburg organization that helps non-profit organizations and schools get supplies and other needs is itself a victim of the economic downturn.

That's according to NAEIR CEO Gary Smith. Smith says the National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources laid off 13 people Wednesday -- four from their office, and nine from their warehouse on McClure Street.

Smith declined to be interviewed on the air, but tells WGIL the recession has caused less donations of goods from U-S corporations, and it's also caused lesser amounts of non-profit groups and schools to seek out those goods, for which they're only charged shipping and handling.

Smith says he's also working with vendors on various cost reductions as well, describing the layoff situation as the first time he's really had to do that, and he feels terrible about it.

Smith says he doesn't believe the 13 laid off will be brought back any time soon, if at all.

NAEIR had 95 employees prior to Wednesday's layoffs.
