Abingdon Schools Managing AYP Results
Abingdon school district officials looked at trends, made comparisons, but still can't help but look forward to what's to come after no child left behind.

District 217 Superintendent David Black tells WGIL while the district didn't meet Adequate Yearly Progress, it's still a measuring stick across the state.

"Elementary wise we where fairly high, we were in the top third," Black said. "And then as the grades go up, the performance level goes down. We certainly weren't the worst or in the bottom 25-percent I would say, but we are not where we want to be."

He says the board of education is behind on doing what they need to do to help teachers move along in aligning the curriculum. He says making the teachings more valuable in the classroom is the next step.

"We're looking at things in the future, possibly an early out here or there, or whatever we can do to get some more time to articulate needs, articulate curriculum, all the way from kindergarden up through twelfth grade."

Black says it's likely the common core curriculum will next be the standard for the state.

He says then a teacher in ninth grade can perhaps know what a student took in fourth, and adjust their teachings accordingly.
