A Special Day for Veterans
Outside VFW Post 2257 in Galesburg Friday morning some of our nation's biggest heroes assembled for a Veteran's Day celebration.

Quartermaster Mike Lummis initiated the ceremony with a moment of silence for those whose lives were cut short defending the U.S. He prayed for those families carrying the burden of losing a loved one in battle.

And for those fortunate enough to survive what he describes as "self-less service," Lummis tells WGIL it's an incredibly meaningful day.

"I think to a veteran, this day is extremely important," Lummis said. "Once you have fought and served for this great country, this day takes on an extra special meaning. It will always, as long as a veteran lives on this earth."

Lummis says Veterans Day confirms the sacrifice of those serviceman who "have understood the high values and virtues of our country since the nation was conceived."

Veterans, supporters, and residents of the Knox County Nursing Home all paid their respects at the VFW hall Friday morning.
