District 205 Compares Field Turf
District 205 can now focus on the specifics of a proposed multipurpose athletic facility.

That is why the district held a meeting last night on the differences between natural grass and artificial field turf for the proposed football field.

Three representatives from Keifer, Turf Solutions Group, and Field Turf presented data on the advantages of artificial turf.

Jason Payne from the Turf Solutions Group says 20 thousand dollars would need to be budgeted in annual maintenance costs for natural grass.

"At a minimum you have that budget along with mowing and irrigation. Occasionally also need to fertilize that top dressed and weed control. So it does add up, it's not free and synthetic either but year to year it's more costly with natural grass."

The other two turf representatives agreed that artificial turf was the cheaper option.

When it comes to actually playing on the surface, several football players from Knox College said it was hotter, but they preferred the consistency of the artificial option when being tackled.
